Tilos is connected by ferry boat with Piraeus port (distance 290 nautical miles, 20 hours), with Rhodes (distance 65 nautical miles) and the islands : Agathonissi, Chalki, Kastelorizo, Kos, Lipsi, Leros, Nisyros, Patmos, Pserimos, and Symi.

Tilos is a small island, in the southeastern Aegean Sea, situated between Nisyros and Chalki islands with an area of 63 square kilometers and 63 kilometers of coastline.
The little island Antitilos is situated just 2 miles from Tilos.
The terrain of Tilos is – basically – rocky, semi-mountainous and mountainous and Ai-Lias is its highest mountain top (612 m).

Tilos was inhabited from the Mesolithic period.
About 1600 BC the Mycenaeans came here. In the 7th c. BC, Tilos joined with the Lindians to found the colony of Gela in Sicily and the island prospered greatly in the 5th – 4th c. BC.
In 1310 the Knights of St. John invaded Tilos. The Turks capture the island in 1522 till 1922 that Italians take control.
Tilos was incorporated to Greece in 1948.

MEGALO CHORIO , the capital of Tilos is a short way inland in the north part of the island. It is crowned by a castle and much of its traditional architecture is still preserved. The sights worth seeing are a small archaeological collection, the church of the Archangelos Michael, the ruins of the old village and the ancient cemetery a short distance from Chorio.
At the center of Megalo Horio you will find rooms to rent, coffee shops, taverns and a bar.

Neolithic tools and bones from dwarf elephants and deer, dating from 8000-7000 BC, have been found in the cave of Harkadi.
A short distance away is the castle of Misaria, built in 1366 by the Knights of St. John.

ERISTOS is the most famous beach of the island. It has fine golden sand and in the summer time constitutes the paradise of campers.
The natural continuance of Eristos is the beach of PLAKA with crystal clear waters.

LIVADIA is the island’s harbor and the site of the castle of Agriosykia, built in the 15th c. The settlement keeps its traditional architecture. You can swim in the beach of the same name or take a boat to the fine beach of Lethra , Skafi or Agios Sergios.
In Livadia you will find small hotels, rooms to let, tourist agencies, tourist shops, cafes and taverns.

AGIOS ANTONIOS is a small settlement 2 kilometers to the northwest, with a fishing port and a picturesque beach. It was the basic port of the island before the construction of the port of Livadia. In the region there are small hotels, rooms to let, taverns and cafes.

In the west of the island are two important monasteries, one of Agios Antonios, in the beautiful bay of the same name and the other of Agios Panteleimonas, the patron saint of the island.

A short distance away is MIKRO CHORIO, the old capital of the island, where there are the ruins of a castle and the church of Agia Zoni, with its wood-carved icon and some superb wall-paintings.

NEARBY ISLETS
In the northwest side of Tilos lies the islet of Gaidaros and in the south east the islet of Antitilos.

TRADITION – EVENTS

There is a major festival on the island, in 25 – 27 July, celebrating the feast of St. Panteleimon, with local dances, food and drink.

There is a large variety of local products on Tilos island like potatoes, tomatoes, watermelons, melons, grapes, olives, almonds and honey of fine quality.
