According to the myth Salamis is named after the Nymph Salamina the daughter of the Corinthian river Asopos and Koulouri from the ancient cape where the ancient city was built in 4th century.
Salamina was inhabited from the Neolithic centuries, as the archaeological findings reveal on the southern part of the coast of the island.

The most important event in the history of this small island was the Battle of Salamis (480 BC), a naval battle fought in the straits between the Greek and Persian fleets, ending in a devastating defeat for the Persians.

During its history, Salamis has been conquered by the Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines and, finally the Turks, from whom it was liberated after the Greek War of Independence of 1821.

The capital of the island is SALAMINA (or Koulouri) is a modern rural center with vivid commotion especially during the summer months.
The Archaeological Museum (tel. + 30 210 4653572) has a display of finds from the region, mainly jewelry and pottery.
In the neoclassic building of the Cultural Association Euripides, the folklore museum and library is housed, which consists of 3500 volumes of books.
About 6 km. north-west of the capital is the Monastery of the Virgin Faneromeni, which has some rich Byzantine decoration and a notable depiction of the Last Judgement.

Near AMBELAKIA, to the south-east of the town, a few ruins are preserved of the acropolis of Ancient Salamis and there are remains of ancient buildings in the sea in this area. The naval battle of Salamis was fought a little further to the south, in the gulf of Ambelakia.

Moulki or EANDIO, lies 6 km. south-west of Salamina, in a beautiful area with pine trees.

A short distance away, at KOLONES, are a few remains of an ancient city which it is thought probably belonged to the Homeric hero of the Trojan Wars, Telamonian Ajax.

For swimming and fishing the most famous beaches are: Eandio, Peristeria, Kolones, Kanakia, Resti, Selinia and Maroudi.

TRADITION – EVENTS
Salamina has a wide variety of community events and other organizations. The most popular of them are the Fisherman’s celebration, the convent of the Virgin Faneromeni on 22th and 23rd August and the community events that are held at the Euripides Theater.
