There is a group of small islands at the north-west of Chios, of which PSARA is the largest and the only inhabited. It has an area of 43 square kilometers and 45 kilometers of coastline. The only settlement is also called Psara.
The municipality also includes the small island of Antipsara.

HISTORY

The recent history of Psara island begins on the arrival of several families from Evia, Thessaly and Epirus. In ancient times the island was called Psira.
During Byzantine times the island was uninhabited.

Psara took part in the Greek War of Independence of 1821 and made a great contribution to the struggle for liberation. In June 21 1824 a tragic event occurred. The Turks disembarked on the island from the north and entered the town where the blowing up of the powder magazine took place on Paliokastro peninsula. The catastrophe of Psara was tragic for the Revolution and caused the death of several thousands people, locals and refugees. On 21 October 1912 the island was enslaved.
