Lemnos lies south-west of Lesvos and south of Samothrace.
It has a strongly indented coastline with two deep bays, Moudros and Pournias, which almost divide the island in the middle.
It has an area of 476 square kilometers and 259 kilometers of coastline. It is a flat island, with a low hill, Skopia at the north-west (430 meters). Administratively, it forms, together with Agios Efstratios, the province of Lemnos within the prefecture of Lesvos.

As archaeological excavation has shown, the island was inhabited from the Neolithic period. It was called Aethalia and the most important city was Hephaesteia, which was named after the god Hephaestus, who was worshipped here.
It flourished in the Bronze Age.
During the Persian Wars it was conquered by the Persians, and afterwards became a member of the Athenian Confederacy, as conquered by the Macedonians and finally by the Romans.

The island was of great strategic importance during Byzantine times, because of its position on the entrance to the Vosporos.
In AD 267 it was destroyed by the Goths, and much later was plundered by pirates, who were eventually expelled from the area by the Byzantine fleet in AD 924.

During the Venetian occupation it prospered greatly.
After the Venetians, it was captured by the Turks (1458). The people of Lemnos fought in their own ships during the Greek War of Independence of 1821. The island was liberated in 1912.

MYRINA , the capital and the main port of the island which is also called Kastro, is built on the site of the ancient city of this name, on two bays: the harbor and Romeikos Gialos. Myrina has numerous shops, hotels and rooms to let of all categories, restaurants, taverns and bars.
On the hill above the picturesque town, with its narrow paved streets and stone mansions, stands the Byzantine castle. It was built by Andronikos I Komninos on the ruins of Pelasgian walls, and later strengthened by the Genoese and the Venetians.
Sights worth visiting in the town include:
THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM (tel. 22540 22990) with finds from Myrina, Hephaesteia.
THE KABEIRION, THE PREHISTORIC SETTLEMENTS OF POLIOCHNI AND IMVROS.
THE CATHEDRAL OF HOLY TRINITY in Myrina has two carved stone campaniles.
The cultural association, in co-operation with the Municipality, organizes events including performances of plays by a local amateur group, dance troupes, etc.

The settlement of PLATY, 2 kilometers outside the town, has several traditional houses and some fine old fountains.

At THERMA, 4 kilometers from Myrina, there are mineral springs.

North of the town lies AGIOS IOANNIS and KASPAKAS, a traditional village built on the slopes of a hill out of the sight of the sea, for fear of pirates.

To the east of Kaspakas, is KORNOS, one of the most beautiful of the inland villages of Lemnos, where excellent local sweets are made.

Further east is AGIOS DIMITRIOS, which produces excellent muscatel wine.

The village of ATSIKI, next to the airport, 22 kilometers north-east of Myrina, lies amidst a host of vines and fruit trees and enjoys a superb view over the bay of Pournias. It also has many local customs and festivals.

To the east is REPANIDI, a traditional inland village (25 kilometers north-east of Myrina), which has some interesting churches with carved and Byzantine icons and the remains of a Byzantine castle at Kotsinas, deep in the bay of Pournias.

In this same area, to the north-east of the capital, is the head-village of KONTOPOULI, which has a distinctive local atmosphere, built next to two small lakes.
North of this village, on the right side of the bay of Pournias, are the remains of ancient Hephaesteia, the most important city on Lemnos in the Classical period. Part of a Greco-Roman theater survives, as well as house-foundations, the ruins of the acropolis and a cemetery.
The Kabeirion, 3 kilometers to the north, is earlier than the Kabeirion on Samothrace.

MOUDROS , 27 kilometers from Myrina and the second most important harbor on Lemnos is a beautiful little town with fine houses. In the region you will find hotels and rooms to let, taverns and cafes.

A short distance to the north-east is POLIOCHNI, the earliest Neolithic site in the Aegean. Four settlements have been discovered here, built one above the other.

Other beautiful villages are PANAGIA and PLAKA at the north-east end of the island, with fine honey and cheese, and SKANDALI, a picturesque little village to the north-east, with the monastery of Agios Sozon nearby.
