Koufonisia is a cluster of two islands, Kato (Lower) and Pano (Upper) Koufonisi that belongs to the complex of Small East Cyclades. Geographically, it is located on the southeast side of Naxos and on the west side of Amorgos.
Upper Koufonisi is the smallest with an area of 3,5 square kilometers and Lower Koufonisi has an area of 4,3 square kilometers but it is almost uninhabited. There are only a few rural houses on it.

Koufonisia were inhabited since ancient times.
Excavations in Epano Mili brought into light important findings from the first years of Cycladic Civilization.
In the course of history, Koufonisia followed the fate of the rest of Cyclades islands. They were dominated by the Venetians and the Turks. Koufonisia set free along with the rest Cyclades islands and incorporated with the rest Greece in 1830.
