Kimolos is a small, barren, mountainous island to the north-east of Milos, from which it is separated by the Kimolos Straits, a narrow channel about one nautical mile wide. It has an area of 37 square kilometers.
There are two settlements on the island:  CHORIO or Kimolos in the interior and PSATHI. It is a good place for a peaceful holiday.

Its name goes back to very early times and, according to mythology, derived from its first settler, who was called Kimolos. It was famous for its fuller’s earth, which has been exported since ancient times, the quarries for which are in the north of the island.
Kimolos was called “Argentiera” by the Venetians, and takes its name from the Greek word “Kimolia”, which means chalk. Both names recall the white rocks of the Island.
Echinousa is also a recorded name of the island, during the ancient times, probably because of the snake Echidna (viper), being common even today on the island. Along with the rest of Greece, it was ruled by Ottoman Empire, until 1829, when it was annexed by the Greek state along with the rest Cyclades.

KIMOLOS (or Chorio) the island’s capital lies inland, about 1,5 kilometer north of the harbor. It is consisted by two settlements, Mesa Kastro and Exo Kastro, which communicate to each other by four entrances.
It is a typical Cycladic village, with gleaming white houses, arches, and paved streets ascending the hill to the ruined 13th c. castle at the top. It has an archaeological collection consisting of finds from the area, and a smaller collection containing Geometric, Hellenistic and Roman pottery discovered in excavations on the island. Remarkable are the churches of Panagia Odigitria, the Birth of Jesus Christ built on 1592, Agios Ioannis Chrysostomos, Evangelistria, Timios Stavros etc.
Most of the people of Kimolos today live in the island’s capital. Here you will find rooms to let providing all comforts, taverns where you will taste the delicious traditional cuisine and coffee shops.

PSATHI, the harbor, is a small village with characteristic Cycladic houses. Ellinika, the main archaeological site on the island, is about 4 kilometers south-west of Chora and is reached either on foot or by boat. In Psathi there are shops, rooms to let, a few taverns and coffee shops.

On the nearby coast of Kofto are the remains of ancient Kimolos, most of them submerged beneath the sea, while the remains of Mycenaean tombs have been found on the small island of Agios Andreas opposite.

At Paliokastro, in the north-west of the island, part of a fortification is preserved, as well as ruins of a circular tower and houses.
At Vromolimni, there is a large cave consisting of two communicating chambers.

BEACHES
Kimolos beaches are mostly on the south part and have fine sand and crystal clear waters. The beaches of Aliki, Bonatsa and Kalamitsi are large beaches with golden sand and the ideal place in any weather.
Nearby you can find restaurants.
The exotic beach of Prassa is located just under the Perlite’s mine. The beaches of Agios Georgios, also with white sand, and those of Livadaki, Klima, Rema and Psathi, the port area, complete the Southern side of the island.
In the north you will find the beach of Soufi and in the west the beaches of Ormos of Athinia and Kastro.
Small ports with hidden beaches can be reached only by boat.

FLORA & FAUNA
Kimolos does not only have unique stones but also an exquisite of flora and fauna. The Mediterranean monk seal Monachous – Monachous lives on the island. In the mountainous part of Kimolos you can find rare endemic viper species, the blue lizard, the shag, the golden owl, rare hawk species, and many migratory birds.
