Iraklia is a small island that offers quiet and peaceful holidays. It is ideal for relaxing, away from traffic and busy town life.
Iraklia is the largest of the complex of Small Cyclades islands with an area of 18 square kilometers and a coastline of 30 kimometers.
The distance from the port of Naxos is 18 nautical miles.
In the island there are 3 settlements: The port, Agios Georgios and Panagia or Iraklia the capital of the island. Agios Georgios is on the north coast and the capital in the interior.
In the island you will find rooms to let, taverns, café and snack bars.
From Pappas Hill you can admire the view of all the islands that are around Iraklia. From this point bird-watchers can indulge in their hobby because some rare species of birds can be spotted from here. In Kastro of Livadi are the remains of a castle of Hellenistic period.
It is also worth visiting the Cave of Saint John, one of the biggest caves on Cyclades, with a maze of stalactites, stalagmites columns and a rare kind of “cavemilk”. From the village of Panagia it takes 40 minutes to walk to the cave.
BEACHES
The island has some beautiful beaches with crystal clear and safe waters.
The most known are: Livadi, Agios Georgios, Karvounolakkos. Inaccessible beaches can be visited by small boat.
LOCAL PRODUCTS
Don’t miss to taste the famous Iraklian honey, different types of cheese, fava and of course, fresh fish.
TRADITION – EVENTS
The most important feasts of the island include:
The celebration in memory of Saint George is held outside the homonym church at the village of Agios Georgios.
The celebration of the Virgin Mary on 15th August at the village Panagia.
On 9th November a great festival is held in memory of Saint Nektarios.
