Donousa is a private paradise for those who wish to enjoy quiet and peaceful holidays close to nature as well as the sea.
The capital of the island is also called Donousa or Stavros. It is a tiny village of a few houses owned by local fishermen. There are rooms to let and taverns in the harbor, where you will taste fresh fish and local specialties.
In the capital you can see the church of Stavros (Holy Cross) which gave the name for the village and up on the hill behind the new building area the churches of Panagia (Virgin Mary) and Agios Ioannis (St. John). It is also worth to visit the cave of Tichos which is hiding in the far northwest of the island near Aspros Kavos.

In the island are the villages of Mesaria, Mersini and Kalotaritissa. A main road links these villages together.

BEACHES
In the island there are fine beaches: Kedros, Vathy Limenari, Livadi at the south and Kalotaritissa at the north.
The main beach is located directly at Stavros between the old part of the village and the new building area. It is mostly sand with few pebbles but only little shade. Camping and nudism are strictly forbidden here.

Kedros beach is situated about 30 minutes walk away from the village at the road to Mersini. It has fine sand and pebbles. Near the beach you will find a small tavern.

Next beach rather close to Stavros is called Panagia that you reach by a 15-20 minutes walk. Some more beaches are found near the village of Kalotaritissa and in the far east of the island at Livadi approximately two hours walk from Stavros.

The northernmost of Small East Cyclades islands is Donousa. The island is located between Naxos and Amorgos.
It has an area of 13,74 square kilometers. Its terrain is stony and creates many coves.

HISTORY
According to the mythology, during the Minoan time Dionysos brought his bride Ariadne from Naxos to Donoussa to hide her from her father King Minos when she run away from Crete together with Thisseas.
Houses were found from the Geometrical times which were built over the foundation walls of a settlement from the Bronze Age.
Later in history the Romans used Donousa for exile.
