Antikythira island is connected by ferry boat with Piraeus (9,5 hours), Gythio on Peloponnese (5 hours), Kythira (2 hours), Neapolis of Laconia – Peloponnese (4,5 hours) and Kissamos of Crete ( 2 hours).

Geographical – Historical Outline of Antikythira

Antikythira is a small island between Kythira and Kissamos of Crete.
It has an area of 20 square kilometers, a coastline of 24 kilometers and a population of 45 people.

The island had many names in its history.
Its ancient name was Egila. The remains of this ancient city are preserved at Paliokastro. Subsequently the island became known as Lii and Sigilio. From the 8th c. it was called Cerigotto. The name Antikythira came later.

The island was fortified by the Venetians in 1207, but piracy remained a huge problem for the inhabitants; today these are mainly descended from Cretan colonists who settled here in 1792.

Antikythira or Cerigotto, is a small island between Kythira and Crete. The island fascinates many visitors with its wild beauty. It is the ideal place for those wanting quiet and peaceful holidays.

It has only one settlement POTAMOS, the capital of the island. Here, you will find a few rooms to let, taverns and cafes.

In 1900, the famous “Youth of Antikythira”, a bronze statue dating from the middle of the 4th c. BC, and the Antikythira mechanism was found in the sea off the island. The bronze statue is now on display in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. The Antikythira mechanism is an ancient mechanical calculator discovered in the Antikythira wreck in 1901.

In the settlement of Galaniana there are the churches or Profitis Elias and of Saint Myron, the patron saint of the island.

A beach ideal for swimming is Xeropotamos, located easterly of Potamos near the ancient Egila. You can reach it from Potamos after 30 minutes of walk or by boat. Other fine beaches are those of Kamarella and Halara.

TRADITION – EVENTS
The island celebrates its holy martyr and patron Saint Myron on August 17 with a big feast.

LOCAL CUISINE
In the taverns of Potamos you can taste fresh fish and the traditional recipes of the island like the local ibex and wine of fine quality. Leaving from Antikythira don’t forget to buy local thyme honey.
