The sea cults deeply into the island, so that it resembles connected by a narrow strip of land 105 meters wide.
It has an area of 97 square kilometers and 110 kilometers of coastline. Astypalea lies to the west of Nisyros and to the east of Anafi.
It has a rocky terrain and scant vegetation.

The ancient Greeks called the island Ichthyoessa, Pyrra and Pylea and it was the first inhabited by Karians and Minoans of Crete. It prospered greatly during the Classical and Roman period. During Byzantine times it was part of the theme of the Aegean. It was there after occupied by the Venetians, the Turks and finally the Italians.
